Beware of Collection Scams
Don’t fall prey to collection scams. Arm yourself with awareness of the following tactics:
- Phone calls without written verification
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a debt collector and the debt is not familiar to you, ask for verification of the debt. Request it in writing. If the individual refuses to provide written verification, they are likely not a legitimate agent or attorney.
- Emailed collection notices
Ignore any collection notices sent via email. Legitimate collection letters are sent via standard mail.
Scammers sometimes pose as collection agency representatives or attorneys. They are seeking your personal information. Or they are aiming for a check from you, made out for a non-existent debt. Do not give out any personal information to debt collectors.
Collection agents and attorneys must follow strict rules. They are not allowed to use threats of violence or abuse or collect an amount greater than what may be owed. They also cannot call excessively early in the morning or late at night. If you receive a written notice of a debt or are harassed by a collection agent, LegalShield can help. They provide assistance in resolving issues such as these.
